Steaming ahead!

Tuesday 20th September 2011

Time is really flying!  All continues to go very well with the fieldschool with the students really focussing on the excavation of skeletal remains again this week in T9.  It has been helpful for them - and for us - to work in all areas: from trowelling back, to clearing larger amount of sand, and sieving their own sand to, in order to check for small bones and any other finds. They are gaining much knowledge about the human skeleton, about medical conditions and terminology!  Activity is quite furious in T9!

In the north of the site, T10 and T11 are still in progress - investigating the results of the radar survey - and tomorow T11 will be expanded in an effort to locate what should be a particularly strong features given the radar results!  We hope to report back with positive news on this tomorrow!

Day by day the students take turns in practicing to use the surveying equipment - this week the total station - and also in drawing burials and ceramic coffins! The students will also receive a few days training in topographic survey methods in October - which some of them seem to be looking forward to! They are all really hands on - as is our inspector!

We were really kept going today - another warm day like yesterday - by our tea man - Flix and also the arrival of a crate of Pepsi at 13.00!!!  Another new arrival came in tonight from Germany and she will start work in T10 and T11 tomorrow!

The students trowelling in T9 and then taking a well-deserved drink break! (Thanks to Larry Owens for the great photos!)
