Up at Quesna - but in the shade!
Thursday 25th August 2011
The weather is still warm - although we are getting rather used to it and with today’s agenda being based in the storeroom at Quesna, it didn’t affect us too badly! Ironically, the only trouble was caused by the good cross-winds in the storeroom which sent the recording forms flying, but we quickly found makeshift paper weights to restore order! The feast for the end of Ramadan - Eid el-Fitr is fast approaching - therefore today presented a last opportunity to get everything at Quesna in order, since our next visit will be for the start of the excavations and the fieldschool - both of which start on Saturday 10th September.
For the fieldschool, each student will have their own excavation kit bag, so final purchases for items for the kit bag are being made - and will be made during the feast of Eid. Some equipment (including trowels) is less easily available here, and were ordered over the internet before departure, have now been delivered to the EES and will be brought out by a colleague in time for the fieldschool! A list has been compiled of all ‘missing’ equipment and we also need to acquire a new set of chairs to accommodate the students and we will also get a tent which will serve multiple purposes (including breakfast!) during the excavations! It is getting quite exciting as the time approaches.
The recording forms which we use on site were also organised today - and those requiring copying brought home in order to get a good supply copied and ready for the 10th! When we left site at 1.30pm, everything was nicely in order and the local SCA have kindly allowed us to use one extra work room for the duration of the fieldschool - which will serve as our lab for the recording and analysis of skeletal remains.
